5 NPAs Killed in Agusan Encounter

FIVE (5) suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in an encounter with government forces the other day in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
Army’s 401st Infantry Brigage spokesman Capt. Jasper Gacayan said the clash occurred at 9 a.m. in Bgy. Mabuhay.

Gacayan said government forces were on patrol in the area when they encountered at least 60 NPA rebels.

A firefight ensued that lasted for at least 40 minutes, leaving five NPA rebels dead.

The rebels then fled carrying their slain comrades. No casualty was reported on the military side.

Recovered at the encounter site were an AK4u rifle, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), a rifle grenade, five blasting caps, an ICOM radio, two electrical detonating switches, a cellphone, 200 meters electrical detonating wires, five backpacks and subversive documents.

Col. Alexander Macario, commander of the Army’s 403rd IB, commended his men for a job well done.

“I commend our troops on their bravery and patriotism. This current effort has progressively pre-empted, dislocated and disrupted the communist NPA activities thereby denying them freedom of action and degrading their capacity to cause mayhem in vulnerable communities,” he said.
