Encounters Erupt in Compostela Valley

NSFA, Panacan, Davao City- A series of armed encounters between the military and NPAs transpired in Compostela Valley Province on August 4 and 5, 2016.

The first incident happened around 1:30 P.M., August 4, when troops of Charlie Company, 25IB figured in a 15-minute firefight against NPA at Km 56, Brgy Rizal, Monkayo, CVP after they responded to the complaint of the community being intimidated and coerced by the said group.

The skirmish resulted to the wounding of two soldiers. They were evacuated to Naval Station Felix Apolinario, Station Hospital for medical treatment.

The second encounter happened in the morning of August 5, in the same Barangay when pursuing troops of 25IB had a 45-minute skirmish against around 60 NPAs who were utilizing IED. Of the 12 casualties evacuated to Naval Station Felix Apolinario, Station Hospital. three soldiers were declared dead-on-arrival by the attending physicians while the nine others were confined for further medical intervention. 

Meanwhile, a dead body of an unidentified female NPA who was left behind by her fleeing comrades was recovered by the pursuing soldiers and three others were apprehended, among them a wounded NPA who was evacuated for medical attention. The apprehended NPAs were turned-over to the PNP for proper disposition and subsequent filing of charges.

On a separate incident in Brgy Parasanon, Maragusan around 1 P.M., August 5, the troops of 71st Infantry Battalion engaged in a firefight around 30 NPA belonging to Guerilla Front 27, SMRC at Purok 5 of the said barangay. One soldier was killed during the incident. The troops recovered another dead body of an unidentified NPA with one carbine rifle, one IED and several personal belongings from the fleeing NPAs.

The Eastern Mindanao Command mourns for the loss of four soldiers, (three died due to landmine explosion) We salute their gallantry and display of good soldiery to the extent of paying the supreme sacrifice in performing their duty in securing the communities from lawless elements. Their death will not prevent us from pursuing our mandate of securing the people and communities.

On the other hand the command condemns in the highest form the deliberate use of landmine by the NPAs which is in violation of the International Humanitarian Law.
