NSFA, Panacan, Davao City – Hours after George Madlos alias Ka Oris announced the termination of their own unilateral ceasefire, members of the NPA ambushed troops of 67IB of the 10th Infantry Division, Philippine Army who were conducting community visitation in Sitio Paliwason, Brgy Lambog, Manay, Davao Oriental. The incident led to the death of Second Lieutenant Miguel Victor Alejo, and the wounding of Private Peter D Sumatin.
Said troops were on their way to the community after the Provincial Local Government Unit and Manay Police Station requested for help from the 67IB to restore peace and order in the area. This happened after barangay officials of Barangays Rizal and Lambog, both of Man-ay, Davao Oriental, complained that armed men were extorting money and forcibly collecting foodstuffs from store owners and ordinary farmers in the area.
Due to the NPA’s announcement and the ambush that followed, Lt General Rey Leonardo B. Guerrero, AFP, Commander, Eastern Mindanao Command reiterated his directive to all units under Eastern Mindanao Command to be on alert and prepare for further atrocities by the NPA. He then re-echoed the higher Headquarters’ position to continue to uphold the primacy of the peace process and to support the government’s unilateral ceasefire despite these attacks.
General Guerrero also condoled with the family of 2LT Alejo who was a member of the Philippine Military Academy "Sinag-lahi" Class of 2015.
