In a report made by BGen. Erwin Bernard Neri, Commander of the 1001st Infantry Brigade, the first skirmish took place when operating elements of 60th Infantry Battalion was fired upon by an undetermined number of CNTs along Lower Dalimdim, Naga, Laak, Compostela Valley about 3:30 in the afternoon. Reinforcing troops from 71st Infantry Battalion engaged the fleeing NPA along Sitio Rizal, Camadi District, Asuncion, Davao Del Norte minutes later.
BGen Neri attributed this to the spontaneous information coming from the community.
“Our troops were able to track the terrorists because of the timely information coming from the communities on their whereabouts and their direction,” BGen Neri said.
The encounters resulted in the recovery of four Ak47, one Grenade Launcher, one M653, one M14 and four M16. Further, one unexploded Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The said firefight likewise resulted in the death of one soldier identified as Pfc Arman C Campos and the wounding of two others identified as Pfc. Ruben L. Lambac, Jr. and Pfc. Ralph Ryan B. Paldomar. Accordingly in his desire to fully neutralize the enemies and in the process, protect his comrades from NPA Terrorist fire, Pfc Campos had displayed courage and attentiveness to take control of a 60 cal. machine gun and fired relentlessly on the NPA position giving the troops a superior advantage over the NPA Terrorist.
“While it is sad that it caused his life, his sacrifice, act of courage and display of the finest tradition of soldiery, his supreme sacrifice will not be forgotten, it will continuously provide inspiration for other troops, stakeholders of peace and the people he served,” BGen Neri said.
“While we continue to pursue our mandate of protecting the people, we also call on the people of Compostela and Davao Del Norte, let us continue to work hand in hand in bringing peace to our communities, let us put our acts together and encourage those who are still in the underground movement to go back to the mainstream and live peacefully,” he added.
In a related incident, one of the Team Leaders of the earlier encountered NPA Terrorist Group was apprehended in a checkpoint operation along Brgy. Sonlon, Asuncion, Davao Del Norte. In an initial debriefing, the apprehended Terrorist revealed of his participation in the encounter. He further revealed that the encounters resulted in the death of one NPA Terrorist and wounding of six others.
