Student-activist Reoriented to the Government

MAWAB, CVP – A former scholar of Mindanao Interfaith Services Foundation Incorporated (MISFI) and a student-activist voluntarily submitted and was reoriented to the government by the 71st Infantry (Kaibigan) Battalion, Philippine Army based in Brgy. Nueva Visayas here on August 24, 2018.

Ian Fernandez Gulmatico alias Ian is a scholar of MISFI from 2013 to 2016 studying at Liceo De Davao University in Tagum City. He was in the third year college when he decided to stop his scholarship.

According to Ian, he left as a scholar of MISFI because he doesn’t want to serve as a volunteer teacher of Salugpungan Schools as what have stated in their scholarship contract or become an instrument of destroying the government thru armed struggle.

MISFI is a community school based in Sitio Tyra, Brgy. Lapu-Lapu, Maco Compostela Valley Province and is allegedly being penetrated by the communist recruiters teaching students to grow up hostile to the government.

Ian also revealed that when he was a student of MISFI, he joined several mass demonstrations against the government together with his schoolmates. These include the rally at Panacan, Davao City in 2016 calling for the Freedom of Political Prisoners and a rally at the DepEd Regional Office in Davao City to call for the pull-out of troops in NPA infested communities. He also said that he underwent the NPA’s Pambansang Demokratikong Paaralan (PADEPA) in 2015.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Esteveyn E Ducusin, Commanding Officer of the 71st IB expressed his gratitude for the surrender of Ian.

“We are committed and more than willing to accommodate other student-activist who wants to go back to their normal lives and take part in peacebuilding for progress and development,” he said.

“It is the third time that scholars from MISFI visited our camp and signified their intention to be reoriented to the government. We expect more of them as we continue our efforts in winning the trust of our people,” Ltc. Ducusin added.
